Pliny, the Younger: : The Letters of Pliny the Consul: with occasional remarks by William Melmoth [...] The Fourth Edition, Corrected

2 vols., 8vo. pp. [iv], 368; [xii], 369-692, [iv]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, with original compartments relaid and modern morocco lettering pieces. Seemingly unrelated eighteenth century engravings of Prince Henry of Prussia and Lord Amherst (C. in C. of the British armed forces and first Governor General of Canada) have been applied to the pastedowns.

The letters of the younger Pliny, including his famous account of the eruption of Vesuvius (in which his uncle died while attemting to satisfy his scientific curiosity), translated by the younger William Melmoth (c. 1710-1799). Melmoth’s translation - first published in 1746 (preceeding the Earl of Orrery’s by five years) - was the first into English, and with revisions by later scholars such as Bosanquet and Hutchinson it remained a standard translation well into the twentieth century.
